Pioneer Healthcare (5190)

A review of today’s public curriculum reads like law schools’ apologetics classes: treaties, court decisions, and old men’s names.  It doesn’t tell of the young mother of 5 on 3rd Ave whose husband died logging, the loss of homesteads to County imposed property taxes, a summer camp that brought KSAs from a dozen countries to create the studio glass art movement, the 3 dozen cultures that blended on this plateau to build new airplanes, schools, forestry practices, families, software companies and fight 2 world wars, pioneer healthcare that worked and the thick medicinal botanical encyclopedias found in most pioneer cabins, those who starved to death after eating their seed corn in March, rural churches that once served their communities, and/or the people who walked these lands for 1000s of years before the Explorers.  Glass School history will be from 1972 – 2014 (last year of centerpieces), all other history ends as of 1945, WW II.  The photo is after last week’s County windstorm PUD power outage.  Electric power came to this writer’s family’s homes in 1948, he learned to read using a kerosene lamp, we washed dishes with water from a kitchen’s hand pump, sibling diapers were washed in the creek, and in the winter, it was dark all the time … and cold and wet.  Granite Falls Museum’s Arcgis maps’ URL below include Sanborn (see “loc.gov”) that show outhouse locations where free Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogs were put to full use.  Visual examples teach best, far better than prose.  This material might even serve college students’ needs: see UK’s The Garden October article, “Education system neglects the importance of plants.”  Schools worldwide are graduating environmental science students ignorant of the “native trees,” if not the “forest”.
