Vanilla Leaf

Vanilla Leaf is a gorgeous plant but like most native NW herbs, it can make humans sick.  Review its uses: lice removal, insect repellent, and you get the idea. The alternate name of Vanilla Leaf is Sweet After Death for good reason.  It is often found in areas that are moist and shady. A herb and a member of the Berberidaceae Family, it grows by Kiosk 06.  Pilchuck Learning Center’s sponsored Western Washington State University SAM Project extinction possibility is slight; abundant, native to the Cascadia Floristic Region.  Vanilla Leaf only smells like vanilla when it dries; leaves might be used for delousing, but not for eating.  (The photo shows it growing in the Gardens and the Spring Farm ethnobotanical plot overrun with competitors.
