Thinking of Dietrich & Sophie

The Gardens are named for Dietrich Bonhoeffer who in the 1940s attempted to convince others that human deeds matter and despaired of most of his peers’ silence.  He believed a change was needed to congregations’ weekly worship: the Apostles’ Creed (341 AD) needed a modern complementary statement of belief.  We also honor Sophia Magdalena Scholl, who was beheaded by an SS (Protective Echelon) executioner in a 1942 Munich prison a few hours after a trainload of judges from Berlin (it was a “day trip”) found her guilty of criticizing her Church and Country.  She was a member of the WW II non-violent White Rose Resistance Group and age 22. Last year, March 6th, the last White Rose member, Traute Lafrenz, died at age 103.  The Gardens and Farm were created, in part, lest we forget.
