In Northern England, in lands that were once forested, there was a single tree, a Sycamore. Last year it was cut down. Humans have been deforesting Great Britain for 1,000s of years; also note the picture of Hadrian’s Wall where a 73-mile Roman wall separated Britannia from the North (accompanied by a broad swath of clearing). West of the Rockies, our deforestation is also immense, not so much by logging but poor land management practices related to livestock, grazing, poor deer, goose (San Juans), and other animals now without predators. Drive from Medford to Vancouver, BC and stop by the oldest tree you can find … perhaps 150 years? We have cut all the big old trees down, every one of them. Much of the West is as sparse as Northern England. Their and our 300- to 3,000-year-old trees are gone.

Drive from Ashland to Vancouver, BC and how many trees can you find, 60 minutes west or east of the I-5 freeway that are over 1,000 years old?
