Rushes

The Gardens’ water shores have been planted with 10 rushes: Sharp-Fruited Rush (Tapered Rush),Northern Rush (Northern Green Rush), Bolander Rush (Bolander’s Rush), Narrow Panicled Rush (Narrow-Panicled Rush), Soft Rush (Common Rush), Swordleaf Rush (Dagger-Leaved Rush), Pointed Rush (Mertens’ Rush), Pointed-Rush (Pointed Rush), Spreading Rush (Spreading Rush), Spreading Rush (Hairy-Leaf Rush), Poverty Rush (Slender Rush), Pacific Wood Rush (Pacific Woodrush), Many Flowered Wood Rush (Common Woodrush), and the Smallflowered Woodrush (Small-Flowered Woodrush).  These are herbs all all members of the Juncaceae Family.  Focused plantings were made by by Kiosk 05, but plants have minds of their own and are now scattered here and there around the waters.  Pilchuck Learning Center’s sponsored Western Washington State University SAM Project extinction possibility is slight for most species; unlikely to be extinct soon as it is found in other areas of North America.  Used by the Indigenous Peoples for baskets, clothing, and even shelter coverings.  Only Erna Gunther, a UofW anthropologist and fried reported the bulbs used as food.  And only the Northern and Bolander’s Rushes have high extinction possibilities.
