Population Estimates (2150)

Indigenous and Pioneer Demographics (research stalled). The writer, who took (1958) and taught (1960s) junior and senior high State History classes, marveled then at the poor teaching materials provided. 60 years later, there are prettier, bigger books, but with the blandest of content, and few report the glory of the Times that created a wonderful Country. Much appears to have been written by lawyers, e.g., the State’s “Since Time Immemorial curriculum.” It gives this writer pause – How is one to include Indigenous history without mentioning the decline in Indigenous population growth found in smaller tribes? The larger tribes show rational growth, especially those at North West Company 1821 abandoned sites where French Canadians stayed around with their Catholic Churches (Colville and Yakima) or the Tulalips who were protected by the presence and teachings introduced by the Sisters of Providence. But that’s just 3 – 5 of the 29 recognized Tribes in the State of Washington, for the others the URLs below describe, “Statistics suggest that in early 1970s, more than 42% of Indian women of childbearing age were sterilized.” The proof is in the numbers, and they are so disheartening. There is no hiding the long-term effect other than not to talk about what has happened to the smaller State of Washington tribes, 1/2 have less than 1,000 in population and the trend lines are down since 1930. Alas!
