Plutonium in America is someone else’s prob;em. 30 years ago, this writer asked a cousin’s husband, a Concrete High grad – UW engineer who had been selected for a team to work on the Hanford Problem, “Eric, I’ve been told there are 10,750 toxic waste sites in Hanford?” He replied, “No, more than that, we find new ones all the time; just contained the 1st one with a concrete liner and it leaks.” He worked with a team of other “top men in the Country” and 20 were dead within 7 years, all from various types of cancer, his, an uncommon heart. What organization:
- continues to subsidize fossil fuels.
- owns more than ¼ of the land of the State of Washington?
- is the largest forestry manager, followed by the State Dept of Natural Resources?
(64% of Washington State’s forestlands are managed by governments, BC over 90%) - and consequently, as proportional, uses the most herbicide applied, even in our National Parks?
- stores much of the USA’s plutonium waste in > 10,000 containment dumps that leak?
- built 2 dams on the Columbia River without fish ladders, eliminating a million spawning beds?
- and sponsored programs since 1930, ending in 1976, that limited Indigenous people’s ability to reproduce (see prior post) and in 3 generations has wreaked extinction on most smaller tribes`?
Pioneer history, the USA and Canada, works because of respect for property rights. We leave private farms out of our discussions; we wish to correct what’s wrong on public property. That said, the map from Space at night (below) tells you all you need to know about Federal concern (both in Canada and the US) for the north Pacific Rim and why lackluster attention, resources, and effort exist at Hanford. We wonder if they have even heard of the term ”biodiversity.” We wonder if Cascadia Floristic Region Floristic Region’s problems can be solved by local citizenry alone … or if the states and provinces will be allowed to try to solve them. The West needs to get the East’s attention, especially the career Federal establishments as the plutonium problem is everyone’s problem. The winds blow East.
