Meadow Checkermallow

Meadow Checkermallow, also called Oregon Checkermallow (Sidalcea oregana) is an herb and is found in open areas, mainly to the east of the Cascade Crest. A member of the Malvaceae Family. WWU SAM Project’s, with 10 observations west of the Cascades, appears to find little chance of extinction.  Meadow Checker-Mallow, also called Meadow Sidalcea, a cousin is most likely found in areas that are moist and open also.  It was introduced (or has migrated up from) the Willamette Valley. The photo at the right is by Kiosk 02.  An herb and a member of the Malvaceae Family, it grows by Kiosk 01.  All the Checkermallows have habitat areas south of the Gardens, all appear to be migrating north.  Pilchuck Learning Center’s sponsored Western Washington State University SAM Project extinction possibility is slight; abundant but each species found only in a small area of Cascadia.

Checkermallows give evidence that native plants along the Pacific Rim are:

becoming extinct
increasing in numbers
