Some say the issue today is that “green” is becoming an unstructured religion; but we wish this, Dietrich’s (closest) tribe today, would go green. We doubt secular and scientific human behavior alone can change mankind’s march to extinction. Those with a God touch in their hearts are needed; we could lead by visual example. Our generation has been careless, ignoring the first expectation of the Bible: Genesis 2:15, “to care for the Earth.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer rephrased this from his prison cell, “…the ultimate question for a responsible person to ask is… how the coming generation is to live?” Our question is, “Are we Christians, if solely focused on faith alone and one’s personal salvation, the enemy of mankind’s survival on Earth?” The Gardens use Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s name as the highest form of respect even though a question like the prior may lead to one’s harm as history has shown. Again, religion changes human behaviors. It is an untapped source in solving today’s ecological challenges. And as Sophie Scholl said, “Somebody, after all, had to make a start.”

And we end each lesson’s question series with the words of E.O. Wilson whom we also greatly respect. That is, if our deeds do not matter and we are to be saved by “faith alone,” do we have the right to destroy Earth at the expense of future generations … as we are doing?
