If in the 1950s living on the Pacific Coast, you heard that someone was “going to the city,” that meant San Francisco (Seattle, Vancouver, and Portland were “towns”). Today it means Vancouver British Columbia with its metro area of 3 million people. The photo of Grouse Mountain was taken from a Vancouver balcony June 2024. Imagine the discussions about clear-cutting that would exist if they logged Grouse like Nootka’s when one looks today at Vancouver Island’s (or any Cascade Range) landscape?

Opponents to climate change action have an easy solution: hide change in plain sight if they can. If they can’t, make sure it is “out of sight.” Also, stall for time. Extinction takes time (next lesson); try to ignore it until it is too late.
Tourist attractions may vary over time, but if you were to guess where over 50% of the World’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) software coding was occuring today, it would be in what city?

Vancouver, BC
