Grizzley Bears were gone from California (1924, Yosemite), Oregon (1931, Chesnimnus Creek), and Washington State (1996, Selkirk Mountains). Hardly anyone noticed, just like when a single plant species does not reseed … gone forever. Grizzlies provide ecological
benefits and will improve the ecosystem’s health. Where grizzlies thrive, ecosystems thrive. These bears regulate populations of the animals they prey on and keep forests healthy by dispersing seeds and berries. The bears’ return would be a major step in the species’ conservation and would benefit the ecosystem. It would also hold deep significance for Native American tribes, for which grizzlies have cultural importance. Tribes and conservation groups say that bears belong on the land.
