1 is extinct, the California Golden Bear; it was a grizzly bear subspecies). The two surviving species are the Western Grizzly and Black Bears (separate lessons for these latter 2). The California Grizzly Bear is the State Animal of California, the only state with an extinct animal on both its seal and flag. Like other grizzlies, its diet consisted mainly of plant matter. Less than 75 years after the discovery of Gold in 1848, the grizzly was all but extinct. The last sighting was in 1924 in Sequoia National Park, exactly 100 years ago.
