Foxglove

Much loved, but not a native species.

Introduced from Europe (Columbia and Costa Rica 200 years ago).  This is a highly toxic plant as it contains cardiac glycoside digitoxin that affects the heart, circulation and muscles.  Used properly, it is used to treat various heart conditions.  Overdoses cause heart failure that can eventually lead to death.  This is true for humans and for pets.  Cut flowers in vases can prove dangerous to pets that might drink its water.  A wonderful flower for one’s garden, but one that must be treated with respect.
