The Wild West was not the left coast of America (Cascadia). Coastal areas and rivers provided shipping and immigration points for early pioneers and profiteers (miners, loggers, hunters and fishermen). It was on the slopes of the Rockies and the high plateaus surrounding where the stories of cowboys and Indians, cattle drives, Chief Joseph, Custer and the Wild West post the Civil War occurred. And Cascadia had its own “lore,” common things that were not commonly known, specific to the area:
Face the wind and the storm is coming from one’s right-hand side.
To start a fire, find dry Western Red Cedar, put 1 round piece between your legs and rotate the other between your palms pressing down on the wood below: feed smoldering area with shaved cedar blowing on the beginning fire.
The chances of starting a fire in the wild with wood that is wet are:
slim to none
the same as dry wood
very good
