California Poppy (6080)

The difference between this California Poppy from the Columbia Gorge and those along the road is more than yellow and red, the latter the National Flower of Poland.  Drive southern Polish roads, you wind along farm fences with properties divided by the bright flowers of the red poppy. These fence rows are remnants of the 2 World Wars where the German wounded needed pain relief (poppy opium made into morphine).  Few Americans remember that Russia (9/17/39) invaded Poland from the East after Germany did from the West (9/1/39). Because of treaties, France declared war on Germany, not Russia.  After the conflict, Russia kept the Polish land taken and Germany ceded both the land confiscated in 1939, plus 24% of its pre-war terrain to Poland.  We show our native poppy (slowly advancing north along the I-5 freeway with global warming) to honor those in remembrance for what we had hoped was forever gone trench wars. Their pain saving medical properties were probably unknown to the indigenous peoples north of the Siskiyous.  Should you see red poppies growing by a residence, they might likely be planted by descendants of Polish or German immigrants.
