Blackcap

Blackcap, also called Black Raspberry, is a native plant often found in dry and open meadows. A shrub and a member of the Rosaceae Family, it grows by Kiosk 11 in the Gardens and the English Remittance Man Cabin at the Farm.  Pilchuck Learning Center’s sponsored Western Washington State University SAM Project extinction possibility is slight; abundant, also found in the Rocky Mountains with little chance of extinction there also.  From Bella Coola to Coeur d’Alene to the Goshute (Utah) to Klamath Falls to Mendocino this berry was dried, eaten fresh, and “highly prized” by the native peoples.  (The photo was taken yesterday at one of the Farm’s 99 ethnobotanical planters.)
